I am a first grade teacher at a school in Charlotte, NC. I teach all subject areas. Our school is comprised of children of many different backrounds and ethniticities. I am a very hands-on teacher. I love giving my students manipulatives to work with. I feel they learn much better by touching, experimenting, and working with things, rather than just using paper and pencil, and doing worksheets. One of our math objectives is to teach measurement. For measuring length, this is wonderful because the students can use rulers and non-standard units (paper clips, cubes) to measure anything and everything. Yet, it is difficult for me to teach measuring weight and volume because I do not have any manipulatives the students can use. In this proposal, I am asking for a variety of weights, balances, and measurement kits. My students will use these manipulatives in small groups and in math centers. They will get a better understanding of weights (ounces and pounds, grams and kilograms)with the Hexagram weights and the Balance with weights that are proposed. I have also requested a weight box in which the students will try to balance unmarked weights. My students will love practicing measuring volume (teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, pints, quarts)with the liquid measurement kit. My students will definitely learn more about measurement with the aid of these hands-on activities. Thank you so much for investing in our future.
