Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students have orthopedic and developmental challenges and are in an elementary school environment. Daily, we work on walking, pre-academics, communication, and daily living skills. For most of our students, this is their first classroom experience.
Our students are in wheelchairs and are nonverbal.
They are able to communicate through vocal output devices, eye gazes, and gestures. We practice walking, standing, and sitting daily. The thing that the students enjoy most is being able to participate in activities with the least amount of physical restrictions.
My Project
Our project requests a soft cuddly therapeutic dog and weighted blanket that is weighted to ease daily anxiety for our preschoolers. The dog is 5 pounds of anxiety and stress relieving comfort for our orthopedically challenged preschool students.
The weighted blanket and dog are both cozy and comforting and would help kiddos with improved sensory integration, concentration, and attention.
Many of our students have challenges with sensory integration, and the weighted blanket would provide assistance and calm In times of stress or distress. The weighted blanket is filled with nontoxic pellets and is machine washable. Being machine washable, the weighted therapeutic animal that we are requesting would provide years of comfort to our students.
Our students learn best when they are relaxed and not in a stressful state. Many of our students are unable to self-regulate themselves, so a therapeutic weighted animal and blanket would allow them to experience comfort in times of stress.
