I am a fifth grade teacher in beautiful rural North Carolina. We have a 44% free lunch rate and many of my students do not have the experiences they need to be successful. It is my goal to give them learning experiences through hands on activities. It is very difficult for my students to understand the relationship between metric and customary units without exploring it firsthand. I would love to give them the opportunity to compare and contrast metric and customary weights. Since we compare and contrast in reading class, I am planning a unit combining math and reading. I have several fiction and non-fiction books that are math based. I am going to have a "Reading about Math Day." We will be immersed in math concepts for the day while we enjoy stories based on math. We will also explore math concepts firsthand and experiment with math. I am asking for 2 fulcrum scales and a set of metric and customary weights. This would greatly help my students understand relationships with weights. I truly beleive my students, both now and in the years to come, will have great success with this project and really enjoy math and reading together. I would appreciate any help with this worthwhile project. Thank you!
