Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations-something that will help them make sense of their own lives.” - Katherine Patterson

I teach at a small school in South Carolina.

Our school is a Title One school which means a majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. I have a very diverse class of 23 eager to learn 4th graders. My students enjoy reading and hands on learning activities.

My Project

It is important for students to read fiction and non-fiction materials. During our self selected reading time a majority of students pick fiction books. With the Weekly Readers and Science Spin magazines my students would have an opportunity to read non-fiction materials every week. Students would have a knowledge of current events and science topics that make science meaningful and interesting. These magazines would be a great addition to any teacher's library. Due to the socioeconomic level of our students most households do not have newspapers or magazines. The students have a limited knowledge of current events and the world around them.

My job as a teacher is to prepare my students for the world that we live in.

I know my students will benefit greatly from being exposed to these materials. With your help, I can expose my students to materials that will assist them in the future. A seed planted in a child’s mind can produce a lifelong learner. Jacqueline Kennedy said “There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all.” Thank you for making a difference in a child's life.
