My Students
I teach 47 eager-to-learn third-grade students in a low socioeconomic school. I team teach with another third-grade teacher. I teach math to two classes, in addition to all other subjects (excluding reading) to my homeroom. More than half of my class receives free lunch.
My students show up every day excited to be at school and ready to learn.
Unfortunately, many of them do not have traditional learning materials at home that foster learning through hands-on learning experiences. I need your help updating the materials in my classroom. Due to economic strains, our classrooms are suffering. Without your help, it is impossible for me to purchase these things.
My Project
As a teacher, one of my goals is to prepare my students for the real world. When you think about a traditional classroom, you might envision desks and rows. However, when you consider the environments adults work in, this is hardly ever the case. I want my classroom to reflect the world that my students will one day work in. Think about a Starbucks where many people go to work and study. There are benches, chairs, tables, and stools. People are free to pick and choose where they work best! I want to help my students learn to make smart choices regarding their learning.
Flexible seating builds a strong classroom community, where students can move, collaborate, and learn together all day.
I am requesting different types of seating, such as yoga balls, so they can quietly bounce and wiggle as they work. Research has shown that movement while learning can help students stay focused. The yoga balls will surround my small group table where students work during stations. Having these alternative seating options will help prepare my students for the real world while building a strong classroom community.
