Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students always come into my art class full of energy and excitement. They love learning about new materials and processes for creating art. My students enjoy making art so much that, when it is time to clean up, they cannot believe the class time is over.
Art class becomes a safe environment where students can feel free to let their creativity run and make some beautiful artwork.
My students live in a border city with Mexico. Our school's student body is very diverse with students who grew up in the city and many students who relocate to the military base. Some of them struggle to open up and be themselves as many are learning English or recently moved to El Paso, TX. I am looking to keep things engaging and provide my students with a meaningful learning experience.
My Project
My project is based on weaving with yarn during the state testing test my students need to take. These materials will make a significant difference in my students' learning as they will work on improving skills that have been lost like improving hand-eye coordination. This project will also encourage my students to learn to be patient as they work through the process of constructing a 3D object.
Students are exhausted from testing most of the day when they come to art class.
It becomes a therapeutic time for many. After testing for hours for many days in a row, my students are tired and it becomes difficult for them to focus and learn new material. Having my students weave will create quiet time for students to relax for all other things and get in the groove of weaving. Weaving becomes a simple project that repeats itself over and over where students focus on one thing making them unwind through the process.
My students will expand on their fine-motor skills as they have an opportunity to learn how to weave or make art using fibers along with learning life skills they could use later in life. Help me give my students the materials to help ease the stress of testing and have art class be a meditating time for them.
