Help me give my students a real-life, hands-on connection to the natural world and environment around them. Help them see how natural systems operate and affect all living things.
The children in our school are a bright, engaging group of curious minds and active bodies. They live in a rural, somewhat agricultural community that has a strong historical background as one of the older communities in NH. Specifically, my fifth graders are budding naturalists eager to learn more about their environment and the creatures they share it with. My goal is to link our district's two elementary schools through the applied sciences related to climate and weather phenomena, and to the natural world and wildlife all around them. Currently we are participating in the Winter Severity Index data collection program through our state's Fish and Game Department. Next year I will be adding the Trout in the Classroom project also through Fish and Game.
I love the strong connection these children have to the land.
I look forward to watching them grow into responsible stewards of their environment enhanced by their deep knowledge of weather and climate related phenomena.
My Project
My goal for this second phase of my project is to raise rainbow trout from eggs to "fry" in our classroom through the auspices of our state's Fish and Game department with help from Trout Unlimited. The program requires a 40 gallon tank with filtration and aeration systems.
My students will be observing and caring for the trout from egg stage to "fry" stage in the classroom and then releasing the young fish in a local river.
In addition to raising the trout my students will be learning about water quality through hands-on testing of local water bodies. They will also be learning about the macro-invertebrates that trout depend on as their primary food source through actual collection and categorization of macro-invertebrate species.
Trout are an "indicator" species in that where trout are healthy and plentiful, the water is clear and clean-good for trout-good for humans!
