Weather Watchers be Aware

My students need copies of nonfiction book titles relating to "Wild Weather" events as well as blank books for each student to create his or her own nonfiction weather book.

How did you know how to dress for work today? I am a self-contained classroom teacher. I teach all areas of the curriculum to second graders. Our school is located in a rural area with many diverse needs. We have many students who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds (39.2% receive free or reduced lunches). We work very hard to meet the needs and provide experiences for all the students in order to make them more successful in life.

Our state standards require that second grade students learn about normal and extreme weather conditions. They also require that students read and comprehend nonfiction reading material. The weather unit is one of the students' favorite units of the school year and, because of this, I feel it would be a prime time to introduce them to nonfiction text as well as give them the opportunity to make this information their own by creating a nonfiction weather book.

The "Wild Weather" nonfiction reading books will expose the children to the information in nonfiction reading material as well as the components of nonfiction books on their level. The blank books will provide them with the opportunity to create their own nonfiction books complete with a table of contents, information pages, illustrations, glossary, and index. All of this reading and writing will be integrated into the science unit on normal and extreme weather conditions.

Your help will make it possible for the second grade students at my school better understand different weather conditions and how they effect our daily lives. You will also enable the students to create a book that they can share with their family and friends. This is knowledge and skills they will be able to keep with them forever.
