This year, our school has began a journey to create a fully accessible outdoor lab. Our school is a public school where students with special needs are able to grow in their less restrictive environment. Our student population is pulled from ten school districts in Northwest Indiana (with an average of 90-100 students). A local pond club contacted our school and wanted to design and donate a fully accessible eco pond. The staff and students were very excited and jumped at the opportunity to start our journey of learning. I was appointed the team leader for this new and exciting project. The pond is in a covered area of our school so it available during all seasons. The staff and students are developing a curriculum based learning activities as part of our first steps at utilizing this wonderful gift. During the year we have many guest speakers coming to help enhance our learning of this mini eco system we are developing.
As part of this growing outdoor lab, we would like to add a fully functional weather station. The weather station will help us understand the needs of the eco system as our weather changes. This weather station will also encourage students to interact with the indoors and the outdoors. With the investment of this weather station our students, (of which many can not go outdoors due to their disability) can become part of the learning experience.

With the addition of this weather station students will be able to help study the habits of the inhabitants of our mini-eco system (which include fish, frogs, and plants). Weather greatly affects the feeding schedule, breeding habits, growth and quality of a growing eco-system. Our students hope to continue to expand the outdoor lab and invite other schools to visit and learn about our mini-eco system.
I am the art/recreational therapist for EPCS. As a member of an incredible staff, I work to include the benefits of liberal arts into each area of studies for our students. One of my main objectives is helping the classroom teacher adapt the lessons so that all levels of students can participate.
