My students are inventors, investigators, creators . . . they are the future. They have the potential to do great things and deserve to have those opportunities. Watching them explore and observe is the most rewarding gift I get as a teacher. I love that moment, when their project comes together and they fully understand the topic we are studying.
My students thrive in an environment that allows creative thinking and exploration.
They are fully engaged and have greater understanding when they can explore with their own materials.
Our school/district is unique. It is in a suburban location, but our district lacks funding for important classroom supplies. We rely on our parent organization to raise funds for important educational supplies. Most of those funds are used for kindergarten aides and our library technician.
My Project
My students love STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)! Every Friday in class, we have STEM Challenge Friday! The students look forward to it all week. I will give them a challenge, some materials, the guidelines and then they are off! They are encouraged to make several designs, testing each one as they go. I love to see all of the wonderful ideas each team creates. STEM allows the students to learn about teamwork, perseverance, and being resilient to failure. The materials I have requested will specifically go with our earth science weather unit. Students will get to create their own weather tools, test how weather works and explore weather in a fun and creative way. A few of the projects will include: making solar power ovens using pizza boxes and plastic wrap, building an anemometer using small dixie cups and straws, exploring clouds, tornadoes and hurricanes in mason jars, exploring the suns energy by using the sun art paper and much more.
My students are fully engaged when they are using materials to create a STEM project.
Students need to question, hypothesis, experiment, test, observe and analyze using real materials in order to comprehend what they are learning.
Using the materials I have requested, my students will be active learners, engaged in their assignment and will be more likely to retain the information that they are presented.
