I teach 6 classes of 6th graders, which equals about 180 students. Many of my students have not had much experience with hands-on science learning in elementary, and they come into my class EXCITED to have time dedicated solely to science. They care so much about each other, about learning and always make me smile. My school is one of the most diverse in the country. Some of my students can afford to donate supplies to the classroom, but many of my students can't even buy themselves a 5-Star notebook.
My scientists LOVE doing labs and projects.
One of the most common questions I hear is, "Ms. D., are we doing a lab today?" Unfortunately, the science supplies at my school are limited. I really want their first year of science to make a positive impression on them to keep them engaged with STEM. Please help me give them the science classroom they deserve.
My Project
My students will use real weather data from the weather station to find patterns in pressure systems and weather conditions. We can pull temperature and pressure measurements from the tablet and create graphs to help us learn how to visualize data. They will also be creating a daily weather journal to see how much the weather varies throughout the year, throughout the day, and throughout the week.
I am excited for them to see how wind speed is measured with the anemometer!
I want students to understand how measurements are made so we know what scientists use as evidence when drawing conclusions.
