One of the North Carolina standards for science requires that students keep track of weather for an extended period of time. The students will then analyze the data they've collected, and come to conclusions about weather in their area. It's difficult to achieve this standard, however, without weather equipment. Our school has one large thermometer for all grades to share. We can take this thermometer outside in the morning, and bring it back to the classroom at the end of the day. But, this doesn't really meet all the requirements that the teachers of fifth grade feel that we need in order to meet this weather standard well. What about barometric pressure, or wind speed? If we had these weather centers, we could do a long term comparison of weather in our area. Each morning and afternoon for a set period of time (a week, a month, a semester) students would take turns taking readings and reporting back to the rest of the class. Then, we could graph the readings and make predictions about the weather in our area. We could talk about how barometric pressure predicts cold or warm weather. We could compare the amount of rainfall to the temperature. In short, there are a ton of really cool activities that we could do to help students understand how weather affects our lives! Please consider donating so that our students can have a basic weather station to help them meet the North Carolina standards, and understand weather better.
