My middle school is set up in houses. We have a house of 5th graders, a house of 6th graders and then a house of 5/6th graders. I am in the mixed house. About of 1/3 of my 6th graders were in our house last year too. Both my 5th and 6th graders love working on labs in science. Much of my time is creating and building labs for them do to.
Science is a strong connector to math, reading and the real world.
I strive to have my students see the real world application to what we are talking about in my science class.
I would like to use the weather station to have real data from our school. I would use the station to reinforce what we are talking about in relation to science and also to reinforce graphing as we would graph temperatures and wind speed. My 5th graders would buy into the data more if they knew it was really from our school. The slinky would be used for 6th grade when we talk about the different types of waves and how they move.
Real data and visual aids help students fully grasp science content.
I used videos this year for both 5th and 6th but I would like to be able to use this equipment in class.
