My students need supplies to construct a safe space within our school courtyard. Students will demonstrate their design and construction skills in this final project, while creating a zone for students to de-stress.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students are heroes for making it to school everyday. The majority come from low-income families, and have adult responsibilities including working late nights and walking younger siblings to school. They pass through gang-affiliated neighborhoods to get to school.
Despite these challenges, our students still diligently focus on their schoolwork and seek to improve their future through Career and Technical Education.
Our school lacks resources to serve our students: it is currently housed in a swing space, there are no flexible spaces for students to interact with each other, and supplies are limited.
My Project
Throughout the semester students have learned about the creative process, how to measure, read blue prints, and execute designs.
In this final project, students will apply their knowledge by mapping their route to school, creating wearable "safe spaces" that can be worn to help combat the hazards they encounter on their way, and designing and building one shareable safe space to be installed in the school courtyard.
Students will use materials like the wire form aluminum gallery mesh, cellophane, and muslin to enhance their structures.
This will give students a stage to showcase the work they do in STEM, as well as provide a service for their classmates.
