The 25 fourth and fifth grade students, who are members of my school's scarf knitting club, are eager to learn how to knit, but we need yarn. I teach elementary visual arts classes to more than 500 students in kindergarten through fifth grades. My school is brand new (just opened this school year). Even though my students and I are in a nice new building, our art supplies are limited at this time due to budget cuts and no resources from the past that we can draw from and use to create art.

When I surveyed my fourth and fifth grade students about their interest in joining a school club that would empower them with knitting skills, I did not expect the overwhelming response they showed. I limited the number of students who could join the club to the first 25 students who brought signed permission forms to me. Most of my students have knitting needles because of generous donations from other sources, but we also need yarn to knit.

We need several skeins of yarn to knit. My students are particularly interested in learning how to knit with two types of different yarn together. This goal will be obtained after they are taught the basics related to scarf knitting. The skills they learn will improve their hand-eye coordination, and introduce them to a craft that will improve their self esteem when they are able to show others their creations. My goal is for each of the boys and girls to knit at least one scarf that they will donate to a local homeless shelter. As a result, they will learn more than scarf knitting skills. They will learn that giving back to their community is cool.

Your support will enable us to see our goals come to past. I commend my students because they have elected to spend time learning a worthwhile craft that can bring beauty and warmth to others. Your help will make it possible for them to actually become scarf knitters.
