We Wuv to Weave

Hooray! This project is fully funded

My students LOVE art, and that is what makes me love my job as an Elementary Art Teacher! I teach Pre-K through 5th grade at a High Poverty school in Georgia, but I want my students to feel as if they are in the BEST place in the world.

Like many schools we have suffered cuts to our budget, particularly in the arts. I am able to buy crayons, paper and paints...but I want my kids to have extra special things that will make them continue to love art and school in general. I want them to be introduced to something new...something that will just make their day.

Recently we did a project about weaving with construction paper strips. They thought it was magical! It was a project that they could ALL be successful with and no one felt as if they were not as good as someone else. I know my student would enjoy a class floor loom (it is called a "friendly loom" because 8 students can work at a time on the same weaving). I would also need some yarn with which to weave.

Weaving teaches the students patience, it is very tactile and allows children to further develop hand and eye coordination. The "Friendly Loom" also supports the idea of collaborative artwork and working as a team to meet a common goal. If you donate to this project you will be reaching more than 600 elementary students in a high needs school and help them to develop skills that will be used in art and in the real world as well.
