Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach three math classes of fifth-grade students. These students come from low socio-economic backgrounds and have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. They are still trying to pick up the pieces of their lives.
My students are resilient and are determined to do their best everyday.
They amaze me each day. Despite the hardships Harvey brought to them, they still come to school each day with smiles on their faces and eager to learn. Each child is different, but still all have a love for learning.
My Project
As a campus, we believe our students deserve to receive the best possible education in spite of the difficulties we have recently encountered.
Our school received extensive wind and water damage as a result of Hurricane Harvey on August 26, 2018.
Our school was without power for several weeks while the repairs were being conducted. When we were able to come back to school, we were six weeks into the school year and had to share our campus with another school because they had more damage to their campus than we did. As the year went on, we started having difficulties with some of our electronic equipment because of the extended time in a hot, humid environment of a building with no electricity. Our students have lost a lot because of Hurricane Harvey, but they deserve to have a classroom with working equipment. The document cameras will be used in the classroom to help with instruction and student learning stations.
