I teach second grade (Go Tigers!) in the Central Valley of California. We serve a unique population of students. The school district is roughly 69% Hispanic students, many of whom are from low income families in rural areas and learning English as a second language. These students need seating that can accommodate their needs.
My students deserve a comfortable learning environment with flexible seating to enhance their learning experience and meet their individual needs.
My second grade Tigers will ROAR for classroom seating. Go Tigers!
My Project
I teach second grade in the Central Valley of California. SUSD serves a unique population of students. The school district is roughly 69% Hispanic students, many of whom are from low income families in rural areas and learning English as a second language. As such, reading, writing, and literacy are a priority in my classroom. In order for these kids to have the best learning environment, they NEED seat choices. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning. They will be able to have options based on their individual needs. During individual work time, Daily 5, and guided reading students will be able to choose a seat around the room that best works for them. Students love to work and are more engaged when working in a comfortable and safe environment. Having seat choices for students keeps them on task and less of a distraction to peers by having them use their core, energy, and burning more calories on wobble stools or surf desks. A classroom carpet enhances classroom library experience and carpet time. We do a lot of activities on the floor such as read alouds, shared writings, interactive white boards, smart board lessons and oral presentations.
