I have an amazing group of 4th graders from a diverse group of cultural, economic, and academic backgrounds. I work in a class community where most households have two working parents. They come into my classroom every day, eager to learn, ready to take on new and challenging tasks, and excited for what is in store.
I don’t know about you, but I definitely have difficulty sitting still, and I definitely don’t enjoy sitting in at a traditional desk and chair all day long.
My students have told me they are tired of sitting down. They love to stand and move around. They love to pick places around the room to work. My classroom has a variety of places in which they can work including a couch, rocking chair, stools, pillows, and traditional chairs. Since offering students the ability to choose where they sit, I have noticed they are more focused and their effort and confidence has gone up!
My Project
My students and I were talking about how I could help them be more focused in the classroom. They didn’t hesitate, "Being able to move and wiggle more while learning!”
My students told me that they loved when we moved around the room during the day.
They gave examples such as getting to pick where they read and write and wiggle while working. My students want to wiggle and wobble while learning; therefore, they have designed a classroom to include alternative seating and allowing them to move and get their wiggles out while learning. We brainstormed ways to increased movement within the classroom.
My students decided they wanted these requested Balance Ball seats, which will allow them to move throughout the day and keep them focused and engaged. I also need the Automatic Ball Inflator to keep the seats at the right height. The addition of Balance Ball seats will allow my students to remove excess energy and increase focus while learning.
