Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Albert Einstein once said, "Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school." I am honored, and excited, to be an educator in Del Valle ISD once again this year. I will be the new 5th grade science teacher to over 100 eager 10-11 years old students this year. In Del Valle ISD; where nearly 40% of the student body has English as a second language and nearly 90% are economically disadvantaged, I am determined to provide my students with a classroom that allows for exploration, experimentation, and discovery. We will focus on developing a growth mindset, understanding the power of "yet" and learning that there is power in the choices we make. I hope when they leave my classroom they have bigger dreams than when they entered and all the tools they need to reach them.
My Project
I was given the luxury of two classrooms this next year; one will be used for instructional time, while the other will serve as a lab space. I am looking to create a flexible learning environment with a fluid, yet unique feel. In order to do that I have requested 4 different seating options to use throughout the classroom, which includes wobble chairs, chair balls with feet, bean bags and steel stools. These seating options will replace common desk chairs in our classroom layout. I love the idea of providing my students with various seating choices as they dive into the work we do around the room. Next, I have selected various kits to promote active learning for concepts we learn about. Some of those kits are a circuit kit for studying circuits and electricity, a light and shadow kit to study refraction and reflection and a microscope to dive into the study of living things and their life cycles, and finally, I have included a visual projector for our space unit. The last thing we have requested in an ant farm for our living science wall that we will build throughout the year! It's going to be a beautiful year learning about many sectors of the science world.
