My Students

I teach in a small neighborhood school with 76% of students on free or reduced rate lunch program.

One fourth of my students receive a weekend snack pack to help prevent hunger in their families.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Many of my students have never been in a classroom prior to their first day of kindergarten. Regardless of their background, all of my students are eager learners!

My Project

Independent reading time in my classroom is a community project.

Everyone is responsible for managing their time as they delve into their books without interrupting the learning of other students.

During this time, students are reading on the floor while lying on a pillow or reading while sitting in a laundry basket lined with pillows. Some students turn their chairs over and rest a pillow next to the bottom of a chair and read from this space. My students need comfortable seating during Independent Reading time. Students who are constantly moving will stay better focused during their book box reading time when they have a wobbly chair to expel their energy.
