Teaching just gets better and better each year! I teach fifth grade science, and my students are engaged! They love science and are chomping at the bit to see what they are going to learn next. This energy compels me to constantly evaluate what can be done better in my classroom. I am looking for any new way to present science to draw in each and every student I see.
Students around the school are bubbling with excitement to get to fifth grade and experience the rich world of science in my classroom!
From the first day, we are seeking to gain an understanding of the world around us, all through the lens of science. Questions abound, and we help any way we can to answer them and continually pique their interest.
Our school is in a rural area of Mississippi, with many students lacking real-world experiences and exposure to technology that are necessary in today's tech driven world. This does not hinder our students from being curious about the world outside of their small communities. I have many bright students with even brighter futures!
My Project
In the science classroom, we work in small group/lab settings very often and are engaged in great activities that need to be recorded! I would love to pull out my phone and snap some quick pics but often miss the moment or forget to take the time.
Most students today relate to social media and using the shared medium of pictures and video; I want to take pictures of students' work and projects and share with the school, community, and parents just how active our classroom is!
Using the camera would enable me to assign 1 to 2 students as class photographers (something I couldn't do with my phone) and allow them to catch some of the highlights during our great time in class together! I would also love to have a tripod to go along with the setup when I may want to record groups performing or record science experiments to share with students who have missed school!
In addition to these base goals, I want to expose my students to some basics of photography. Composition of shots and lighting are two areas I would like to focus on. In a classroom setting, while a selfie isn't against the rules, knowing how to setup a shot that captures what they are doing can be very important!
