My Students

I have a diverse group of creative, intelligent, and inquisitive 6th graders who are very interested in the world around them. They enjoy discussing current events and seem to feel that the only bad question is the one left unasked.

This group of kids wants to make a difference.

They want to recycle, fight against social injustice, and debate any topic at hand. They observe the world and people very closely and love interacting with others. They feel strongly about issues and are willing to stand up for their beliefs.

My Project

The Watsons Go to Birmingham – 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis describes the civil rights era from the perspective of a young (and extremely mischievous) boy and his family. When older brother Byron starts acting up, the Watsons of Flint, Mich., go to visit their notoriously tough grandmother in Birmingham, Alabama just as racial tensions are peaking during the incendiary year of 1963. They arrive in Birmingham in time to see the deadly bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

This award winning book seamlessly blends fact and fiction in a way that will grab my students' attention and give us a starting point for many important History and Social Justice discussions.

It is full of humor, meaningful themes, rich vocabulary, and has an interesting story line. My students tend toward Fantasy and Realistic Fiction in their reading choices and this book is a well written text in the Historical Fiction genre that I hope will whet their appetite for more!
