Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My energetic and enthusiastic third graders attend a Title 1 elementary school in Round Rock, Texas. I have a very diverse group of students who come from different backgrounds and experiences. Being a Title 1 school means that over 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast. They thrive on hands on experiences in reading, writing, math, and science. They come into our classroom with creative and inquisitive brains like little sponges, ready to soak up all kinds of learning experiences.
Many of my economically disadvantaged students do not have access to books or computers at home and rely on our classroom to check out high-quality books.
We incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and flexible seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! I feel very lucky to work with students who come into my classroom with open hearts and minds, ready to listen and learn each day!
My Project
I want the students in my class to read, read, read! Research has shown that kids need to make connections to characters in books to increase their comprehension and love of reading. It would be so awesome if my students could get their hands on more books that have characters in them that look and act like they do! These books should motivate them to read more, and expose them to new vocabulary, positive role models, and life lessons.
If you donate to our project, we will receive up to 35 multi-cultural and Texas style picture and chapter books to read.
The more they read, the more they will learn! Thank you so much!
