Help me give my students high interest books, including diverse writers and topics, graphic novels of classic literature, and Newberry Award winning books.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love life. They love interacting and being around people. Going online has really impacted them socially and they are working on being the best version of themselves they can be.
My students are just good humans.
They work on being the best they can be and learn from their mistakes. They really care about themselves and others. It is good to see such hope in the world.
My Project
My students have great capacity to learn and love. However, they are not avid readers for the joy of reading. They continually want to be more socially and emotionally aware, but with remote learning, quarantining, and isolation, connecting with others has been more and more of a struggle.
I want to give my students a chance to access books that they can relate to, on their level, that show quality connections as humans to help create a love of reading and learning.
With the books selected, I am hoping my students will be able to challenge themselves, find themselves in the books the read, and to connect to other people.
I have chosen graphic novels because I have a lot of lower-level readers who basically didn't read for two years while virtually doing school. They need a chance to get back into reading without it overwhelming them. I chose diverse books with authors of many different cultures as my students are of many different cultures. I have chosen Newberry Winning novels that will engage them on a real level. I have chosen mystery and thriller books that will reach the students with their interests. I have chosen books on this list that I have a particular student in mind for each one. My students deserve the chance to love reading.
