Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students want to read fluently so they can read for understanding to improve their learning. They also want to read fluently so they can read for pleasure. They want to go on the adventures that books offer.
These wonderful students come from homes that often do not have books and their parents rarely read.
They, as 2nd and 3rd graders have decided to change this situation. They want to inspire their parents to read with them. They are primarily the children of new immigrants and they are the first generation to receive a formal education. They know that reading will open so many doors for them and their families. They are 21st century learners who know that technology is important to their future. They want to use the gift of learning and that's why they are called the Brainy Bunch!
My Project
My students are members of a combination class and they often learn independently. Individual CD players with headsets will allow them to read along with non-fiction stories that are interesting and challenging. The Read Naturally system facilitates reading at the student's reading level and challenges the student to progress steadily to attain fluency and comprehension. The student learns interesting facts that support their core knowledge while improving vocabulary and reading speed. Our current CD players are 7 years old and wearing out from heavy use. New equipment will give the students the opportunity to engage in this program easily. The extra headsets will be used with our computers to individualize instruction with the many programs available to us. I am free to work with the students who need teacher directed instruction during this time. This added technology will create a win-win learning situation for this lively, dynamic community of learners.
We want to read.
These smiling children already make a difference in this world by being dedicated learners. They will continue to make a difference in this world as they become more fluent and well-educated.
