What was your favorite book in high school? Did you enjoy reading, or only do it as it was assigned? The struggle to capture, and retain, the attention of teenage readers can be a challenge.
I work in a technology based school within a larger urban school district.
My students have all made an extra effort to put aside all the daily struggles in their lives, knowing that having an education is the only way they are going to be able to get what they desire out of their lives. College is not seen as an option to my students; it is a requirement.
It is my goal to create an engaging classroom experience to make learning easier and more exciting for my students; which includes a library that reflects the diversity of its readers.
My Project
Very few of my students spend time reading anything that is not required. As with a large majority of teenagers, most of their time is spent texting, online, or watching TV. I am requesting high interest, relatable books for my classroom library, as we do not have a school library. The selected books cover a range of diverse topics and cultures, to better reflect the student population that will be reading these books.
Through the support of this project, my students will be able to strengthen their reading comprehension, read about several different topics, and enter a new world through the magic of literature.
