Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade teacher in a school that has an unfortunately high number of failing and frustrated students. The majority of my class is two grade levels behind in reading, and is in desperate need of a strong academic year to catch them up. Considering the high needs of my students, it is horrifying to see the classroom library available to them: a few baskets of dilapidated books. They want to read, and they need some good books!
I am requesting a classroom set of the inspirational and captivating book, Bud Not Buddy. Aside from being a Newberry Award winner and a Coretta Scott King Author Award winner, it is a book just above the level of my students that will undoubtedly grab their interests with its story of a 10 year old orphan struggling to survive and find a home for himself during the depression. In order to accommodate my English Language Learners, I am also requesting an audio version of this book so that those students can follow along at home, enabling them to keep up to speed despite the challenges that face them.
This book will tie together literacy and Social Studies curriculum for my fifth graders, bringing to life many aspects of American history in a beautifully written piece of literature. I know that my students will be able to truly engage in the book if they have their own copies to treasure and explore.
Please help my students in their fight to read. Without good books to take home at night, it is really hard to catch up to grade level. My class will not only benefit from being given excellent literature to own, but they will learn so much from Bud about determination, tolerance, and family. It is a wonderful gift, and I thank you for considering the needs of my very bright and determined students.
