Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine having children that are learning incredible things in a language you don't understand? Can you imagine being a child who is struggling to learn academics in one language while speaking another at home? For my students this is a reality!
My very eager second graders are English Language Learners living in a low income inner city area.
All of my students come from immigrant families who speak Spanish in their homes. Our school receives 100% free lunch based on the students' family income levels.
My Project
Research shows that in order to learn a second language, it is critical that you have a strong foundation in your first language. For my students, this is not the case. These students have entered school learning in English at age 5 while speaking and learning Spanish at home. Now, at age 7, they are developing academic language in English without having a strong base in Spanish. With these take-home kits, I will be able to provide the parents of my students with resources to help their children build their first language skills at home. The kits include books, games, and resources in Spanish which will greatly increase their competency in their first language, therefore boosting their abilities to pick up English! A resource like this is invaluable in the impact it can have on the academic success of these at-risk students! It will also provide an opportunity for families to spend time together learning, having fun, and loving each other's company!
