We Want to Read the South Carolina Book Awards Books
The cost of the books from Barnes and Noble is $522, including shipping and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
Each year the 20 nominees for the SC Children's Book Award are announced. Elementary school students across the state are encouraged to read as many of the titles as possible and then vote for the winners. Many of the students at my school would love to read these books and be able to vote. The only problem is that in a school of nearly 500 students, there is only one copy of each title. That means the students have to wait in line to read the books. Often they become discouraged and just find something else to read.
What I am asking for is a set of 3 copies of many of the titles. That way my students can get together in small groups to read and discuss the Book Award nominees. I know these are all really good books - why would they be award nominees if they weren't?? I also know that my students are always more motivated to read when they can get together with friends and discuss the books as they go.
In my classroom of 15, I only have 2 students who pay for their lunches. I also only have 7 students who are reading on grade level. Many of the books on the awards list are too hard for most of my students to read on their own. What I would like to do is open these wonderful books up to some of my struggling readers by enabling them to work with others. I know they would all enjoy the books. And, most importantly, I know they can all become better readers if they just have a chance to get their hands on the books.
Please help me open up these wonderful award nominated books to my students. They want to help pick the winners too.
