Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students present two distinct but equally important challenges: unengaged readers whose interest hasn't been sparked AND readers that have read every book in our library. My students need BOOKS to begin or continue their journey as life-long readers. Help us READ!

My students attend a public charter school in the center of Washington, D.C.

Our school is grounded in the following principles: Integrity - We accept nothing less than the best. We maintain high expectations for our entire school community. We cultivate an ethic of service, responsibility, participation and respect. Determination - We never give up. We are relentless in the pursuit of our mission to ensure the success of every student. Achievement - We get results. We hold ourselves and our students accountable to the highest levels of academic achievement. My students are incredibly diverse: 54% of our students are African-American; 25% Latino; 18% Caucasian; and 3% Asian. In addition, 21% speak more than one language at home, mainly Spanish and over 65% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Most of the students live at or below the poverty line and have very few, if no books at home.

My Project

An integral part of our reading curriculum are the books that our students use during independent practice. Each day, we are working to foster a love of reading and the only way to do that, is to have books that meet the needs and interests of our students. This year we added 50 new students to our grade and our library is desperately trying to meet the demands of both our eager and reluctant readers, but it needs some sprucing up! The addition of these new books could change my students' lives in one of two ways: inspire them to pick up a book a read or help them to reach our class goal of reading on grade level by the end of the year. My students will be able to have a choice when shopping for books in our library and this will increase their reading stamina and overall reading ability.

This donation will make all the difference to our classroom.

The main predictor of reading success rests on the amount of books, words, and pages with which a student comes into contact, so books are critical. If my students cannot find an interesting book, then, I have little to teach. However, it only takes one book to ignite a passion. And as Dr. Seuss wrote, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go," which is the ultimate goal.
