This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Recess is one of the only times during the school day that students do not have academic pressure to perform. They can relax and be themselves and enjoy playing with their friends. My students however, lack any outdoor toys to play with. We could really use the basics to make recess more fun!
My students are very poor.
Many of them live in apartments and do not have yards to play in. Outdoor play to them consists of pavement and whatever they can find to entertain themselves. Our school however has many open areas for them to play.
We are located next to a city park and have a large grassy area that can be used to play organized outdoor games. Unfortunately, because my students live in poverty, their parents are unable to provide the basic materials we use in class for academic purposes, let alone for recreation. The only experience they have with organized sports is at school, I would love for them to have the opportunity to practice and play during recess.
My Project
If funded, the jump ropes, kick balls, soccer balls, basketballs, etc., will provide my students with opportunities to play and interact in a way they are not used to. They will be able to work cooperatively with one another while having fun!
We put so much pressure on them to be successful and work hard, sometimes it's hard to remember they are still just children. I have children who will able to teach one another to play football and soccer and others who can bond while jumping rope. I know that providing opportunities for them to play will help them feel successful and happy and these feelings will carry into the classroom in academic areas too.
My students work very hard and deserve to have time to just be kids.
Recess is the perfect opportunity for them to make choices about what they'd like to play and shine in ways they may not in the classroom. Jump ropes, sports balls and games will provide my kids with the opportunity to play and be children, something that is an important part of being in school.
