Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students come to our school, MCHS, because they tested low in eighth grade math and language arts yet want to attend college. As children of new immigrants, many become the first in their family to attend college through our early college program. With the support of their high school teachers, they build their skills and confidence and come to believe that a college degree is possible. As most of our students come from low-income homes, many choose to take on the challenge of our fifth year program to earn more college credits. By the time students have entered their fifth year, they have high expectations for themselves in college.
Our students redefine themselves as successful students, rather than allowing themselves to be defined by low test scores.
They gain confidence and take personal ownership of their education through individualized projects. In tenth and twelfth grade, students present one of their projects to a panel of teachers, and through these experiences each student’s voice is heard and grows. When they leave us, we see young people who are ready to pursue their own academic goals and who are uniquely prepared as leaders for their generation.
My Project
Every year the Middle College National Consortium hosts a Student Leadership Conference, an opportunity for high school students from around the country to gather, collaborate and share their work. This year the conference theme is environmental sustainability, and the ten students who were selected from our school will complete a project that must have a direct impact on both our school and our local Queens, NYC community. This conference is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn teamwork, leadership and public speaking skills. None of our students have ever been to Texas, and three have never been on an airplane; this opportunity is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them!
Our ten students were selected through a rigorous application process and are eager to head to Texas to share their work and learn from their peers around the nation.
Although our school will cover the cost of airline travel for the ten students, their two chaperones and one American Sign Language interpreter, we need funding help for registration for the conference. Although we will do fundraisers to raise as much money as we can, we are a Title I school and still need to raise at least $1500. We would greatly appreciate any support you can give us. Thank you for considering our team!
