I want to involve my students in more hands-on STEM, small group activities so they may work SMARTER, TOGETHER!
We are a Title I public elementary school in a large urban community in Missouri.
Many of our families are English language learners.
In the 2015-2016 school year, I have a split class of Kindergarten and first grade boys. They are a very active group and work smarter, together when involved in learning activities that includes hands-on activities with out of seat movement.
My Project
Lesson plans thus far this school year have focused primarily on developing and nurturing budding literacy and math skills, leaving little dedicated time for STEM learning. My students need STEM Learning Kits to help encourage their growing interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, areas that are critical to my students' education and future. With these kits, they will be exposed to a variety of materials and experiences that will help broaden their horizons, interests, and most importantly, their imaginations. These kits will help my students build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, leading them to plan, create, and test their ideas that answer grade level scientific questions such as, "How can you build a house that will not blow down?" (from the Fairy Tale STEM Kit, relating our STEM activities to literacy) or "How can you make a boat sink?".
With your support of our project, my students will be able to enjoy new experiences and share the excitement that comes with learning new things.
The learning possibilities with these STEM Learning Kits are endless and the anticipated impact immeasurable. Our STEM resources are very limited, so the addition of these STEM Learning Kits to our classroom toolbox would make a world of difference to my students' ability to learn smarter, together!
