Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is filled with wonderfully amazing students who I learn from daily. While our school is in a low-income area and is also a Title I school, students come in daily, ready to learn and with smiles on their faces.
I highly promote a classroom community that is more like a family!
We share ideas, engage in group activities, share stories and work in small groups. This sense of family and community helps my students know that they are loved and that each is a valuable member of our team.
100% of the students within our school receive free breakfast and lunch. While the family incomes are low, I have been lucky enough to have tons of family engagement. However, due to the community dynamic, parents struggle with providing students with extra materials.
My goal is achieved if my students are eager to come to school daily and learning is made to be fun and engaging.
My Project
Help me give my students access to high interest, high quality, engaging, culturally and developmentally relevant books that are at and above their grade level as well as black lights and highlighters so we can get our Neon Read-On! This is a fun engaging way to grow their brains and inspire a love for books!
I want to create a love of reading in my students with high-interest novels that entice my reluctant readers to independently pick up a book.
Many of my students are reading at lower levels and have a lack of confidence in their reading abilities. My goal is to provide my students with reading materials and engaging activities they can relate to, as well as high-quality reading materials that we can dig into during discussions.
To do this we will be having Neon Read-On events in our classroom where students can use highlighters, notetaking strategies and then black lights to tangible SEE their notetaking and have fun while doing it! We will follow this reading events up with simple classroom games that are related to the stories they are reading and include glow in the dark activities.
With your support, I hope to provide engaging activities for my students and to continue building a culture of reading in my classroom that is fun, with culturally diverse novels and materials that will build my students' literacy skills and keep them interested in reading!
