My students are an amazing group of fourth graders who love to read and are thirsty for new learning experiences. Their hearts have been broken by our sudden school closure, but they are resilient, and we are continuing to grow within our new normal. Our student population is extremely diverse. Over 40 languages and dialects are spoken in the homes of our students. Many are the first generation in their families born in the United States. As a group, they are excited to learn and ripe for new adventures in learning. They are inquisitive, innovative, and crave complexity on a constant basis. With our new shelter-in-place mandate, they are all learning while at home.
We are still adjusting to the sudden change in our learning environment. We have months left to continue our fourth grade journey. I would love for my students to have the books they crave, math games like pentominoes to keep their minds sharp, and the resources like colored pencils that will help them be successful. Blocks Rock and pentominoes games will help them pass the time learning and give them alternatives to screen time.
Our schools were closed abruptly, so most students left school without their school supplies or other materials to help them continue learning at home.
I would love to put books like Chasing Vermeer and Virginia Mysteries in the hands of these avid readers and give them materials like colored pencils, scissors, and index cards to assist with our virtual math practice. Packaging and mailing these resources to get these into the hands of my students will put smiles on many little faces.
