This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I've worked at my school on staff with the marching band for five years and became the band director this past school year. I can genuinely say that I work with some of the kindest, most passionate kids I've ever come across. They deeply care about music and their band community.
Richfield, the state of Minnesota's oldest suburb just south of Minneapolis, calls itself an "urban hometown".
We have the community of a small town but the diversity and opportunities of a metropolitan city. Our student body is truly diverse, and we're stronger because of it.
My Project
Minnesota's marching band scene is very unique. While many schools have traditional fall marching programs, many also have competitive summer parade bands. Our school is in its 64th season of the summer Richfield Marching Spartans.
Our drumline membership has exploded over the past two years, and our old equipment can't keep up.
The drums kids carry are a lot heavier than they look, and the harnesses we currently have are pretty old and falling apart. The harnesses we're requesting in this project are becoming the industry standard because of their ergonomic design.
Because we're a summer parade band, the staff has to keep an eye on students for heat exhaustion and health issues. The students in the drumline are usually the first ones to go down because of the added weight and stress on their body. We'd like to give those kids a better chance of healthily participating in parades by giving them the right equipment.
