Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students struggle to have their basic needs met at home. Often, many of them do not make it to school on time, eat breakfast, or have had a good night's rest when they start their day. Many of the families do not have enough money to buy the school supplies that were requested for the year, leaving them at a disadvantage compared to their other peers. Being a teacher at a school that is filled with families that are high poverty is often a struggle, since many students are regularly unprepared to learn, both mentally and physically.
My students are different.
Despite what happens at home, they come to school ready and excited to learn. They are able to leave their struggles and insecurities at the door in order to learn. Once they walk in the door, I see nothing but smiles. They are ready to get their hands dirty and fill their brains.
My Project
Many of my students are reluctant readers for various reasons. Several of them read below grade level and lack the confidence to pick up a book fearing that it will be too difficult. Others "hate" reading because they believe that books are boring. Some students wish for a greater variety of books that they already enjoy. Most of my student love reading but often complain that we don't have enough books that they really love.
Finding the right book sparks a joy of reading while jolting the imagination into hyper drive.
Many of my students want graphic novels because they are easy to read with dynamic pictures. My students feel more grown-up reading graphic novels because they often have several chapters. They feel like advanced readers every time they find a fat book at their level. My students want more books in our classroom library so they can practice becoming fluent readers.
