My students need the book, "Bullying in Schools," and a variety of other books about bullying and different cultures, a magnetic calendar kit and supply caddy, 2 chairs for our older buddies and 10 seat-storage sacks.
Bullying starts so young. According to studies, about 85% of bullying is witnessed by others. Children need to be taught that bullying is not just part of growing up, and they need to learn about it from a young age. What better way than involving some older students as role models?
My students are complex and wonderful.
I teach a kindergarten class with students that are a mix of general education children and children with special needs. We are part of a large urban school in the poorest congressional district in the nation. By the time my students make it to school, many of them have already been the victims of bullying. Then they get to school and there are a lot of differences among them. Each day they have to make the choice between working together and turning on each other. Fortunately I have helpers: former students who are now in 4th grade!
My Project
Your kind donation will provide my students with excellent anti-bullying resources. The Townsend Press book "Bullying in Schools" provides a guide for bullying education. Books like "Jungle Bullies" will encourage my students to read and explore the themes, while books like "Chaat and Sweets" will introduce my students to other cultures in a respectful way. A lot of bullying comes from ignorance, so I want to help my students learn! Some former students (now in 4th grade!) have volunteered their recess time to come be kindergarten "Buddies." They serve as role models and read with my current students. I am requesting two chairs that will be a lot more comfortable for our older buddies than squeezing into a chair sized for a 5 year old. Our buddies will use the calendar set to engage a few students at a time in an academic activity that will encourage them to open up about bullying situations. They will be able to understand past, present, and a future that is free of bullying!
I aspire to teach my students the foundation of cooperative learning and treating others with respect.
Please help me make a difference in my children's lives by providing them with the necessary resources they need to become better aware of bullies. Thank you for considering helping our class!
