This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Excerpt from The Crossover written by Kwame Alexander.
Unfortunately, my students have yet to get to the line. Since January, they have had a string of subs that have used a series worksheets to teach the class. What makes it worse is the fact that this was a reading intervention class that served students who are a grade level or two behind their peers. Thus, students have not only become disillusioned with the class but have fallen further behind. So I hope this book and it's use of powerful and purposeful language will reignite their desire to read.
My Project
I have recently taken over a set of reading intervention classes that have a series of subs since January. During this time, the students have been asked to complete a series of worksheets. With only two months left in the semester I want to awaken students love for reading. The Crossover, is a book that can do just that. As Marilyn Singer wrote, "A basketball novel, yes, but also a story of family, dedication, loyalty, loss, and redemption wrapped up in a slam dunk of powerful language."
My students have been deprived for months of powerful and meaningful words.
By building my unit around this novel I hope to expose students to the power of words and story. Then as a culminating task I will challenge student to write and share their own stories. Ultimately, I believe the way Kwame Alexander uses language will inspire my students to do the same.
So when I say, we still have time for one shot. This is it. It's time to change their view of reading as a chore, to a tool for powerful expression. So please give what you can so I can give these neglected students what they deserve, a relevant and thoughtful educational experience.
