Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
***Who We Are...***
I teach middle school drama / speech grades 6 - 8. Our title I school district is in a high-risk community where most students are minority and low-income. Though our students struggle at times to succeed, they are passionate, imaginative kids who deserve the chance to experience a creative learning environment.
***The Project...***
I teach 8th grade theatre students public speaking, problem-solving, artistic, and teamwork skills by mounting 10-minute plays at the end of a 9 week class. This project allows students to create designs for their plays. This project allows students of all ability levels and learning types to play a role in the creative process. Special needs students of all types (gifted, slower learners, etc.) contribute in a way that works best for them.
***How the Class Works...***
1. Students elect directors based on subject knowledge, fairness, kindness, intelligence, and leadership skills
2. The class chooses plays from scripts offered
3. Students audition and are cast based on both student interest in specific roles and ability level (every student has a role)
4. The directors lead rehearsals - planning out blocking (movement) and helping their peers interpret the text
5. Each student contributes element of design to the play: set, lights, sound, makeup, costumes, and prop (based on student interest or skill level in that area) WE NEED LIGHTS!
6. The designs are placed on display by the director
7. Students bring or create costumes, props, set pieces, sound effects, etc. that fit the designs they have created
8. Other classes are invited to see the productions
9. Students perform for between 40 – 60 audience members
10. Students and audience take part in a question/answer session where they evaluate their own work and the process itself
***The Problem...***
Right now our creative students have to resort to using flashlights and power point to create their lighting. The kids ask every quarter for more lighting, but I have been unable to find a system to control the lights until now. The lights and dimming system I have chosen will allow students to hang, focus, and control lights for play productions. More advanced students can also learn light design.
***How You Can Help...***
Your donation will make it possible for theater students to have lighting system they need to create their visions. By providing these materials, you allow the students to light up stage designs that will bring our productions to life.
