Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

We are growing lot's of fresh fruits and vegetables in our school garden. Now all we need are some things to go on our salads. Our outside garden grows lot's of fresh veggies all year long. My students are slowly but steadily learning to prefer healthy fresh foods (like salad) over junk and fast food. I'm working hard to teach them that healthy food can also taste really delicious. That's where you come in! We need lot's of delicious things to go on our salads so that my students really want to eat their veggies. I'm asking for lot's of tasty and healthy salad toppings, including ranch dressing, thousand island dressing, Italian dressing and croutons.

Teaching in a high poverty school, many of my students do not have access to fresh food.

Therefore, this project would allow them to make fresh greens (that we grow ourselves) a part of their diet.

I am willing to bring in a wide array of fresh ingredients for my students to try, but the salad dressing, salad toppers, and disposable bowls helps defray some of my cost. I also think growing our own greens in my classroom will be a fun activity that will encourage other students to think about joining our lunch club and making healthy choices.
