Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income inner-city school region with a large population of immigrant refugee families from a variety of Latin American countries including Cuba, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Honduras, and several others. Our school is a Title I school. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom.
Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.
Last year, our school, students and their families were affected by several hurricanes. Some families lost their homes and had to relocate into our school community/district. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.
My Project
I plan to create a motivational program that will empower our cross country running team to adopt and maintain a healthy, focused and active lifestyle as they prepare for competition. I intend to have my runners engage in activities that will range from aerobic exercises using the requested headbands, running socks and fitness trackers coupled with the existing laptops to sports related activities using existing field day equipment. The runners (in groups, on a rotating basis) will be encouraged to engage in a variety of aerobic exercises including walking, jogging, running and participation in sports related activities as they prepare for upcoming events. They will be encouraged to use the socks, headbands and fitness trackers as they exercise and download the results onto our laptops. The running socks will help stimulate blood flow and provide muscle support, these minimize post-run soreness and provide moisture-free comfort while exercising.
It is my hope that the use of the headbands, socks and fitness trackers to monitor physical health and fitness will provide my student runners with an opportunity to become healthy and fit as they develop into productive, active athletes of the future.
