My Students

We are located in an extremely overcrowded elementary school in New York. We work very hard and appreciate learning through laughter, fun, and play. It is a long school day when all we do is sit in our seats and work.

You often hear an explosion of laughter coming from my classroom.

Second grade is an awesome place for any child to be. I am a second grade teacher for a very eager and excitable group of children. I am truly a lucky teacher.

My Project

I teach an awesome group of second graders. Last week we were having a discussion about our love or dislike of reading. To my horror, I discovered the majority of my students did not like to read. I was horrified because growing up and as an adult, I love getting "lost" in a book. Then I had a thought about how to develop a desire to read among my students.

To put it simply, children just need to choose the book they want to read and be able to keep it.

I would love to set up a reward system where a child is given the opportunity to earn an Amazon gift card to use to buy a book. Children will be awarded by the number of hours and minutes they have read. By counting hours and minutes this allows for all my students to have an equal chance to earn a gift card. I have some outrageously good readers that devour books, but I want my struggling readers to feel inspired.

I can hardly wait to invite the first child to earn an Amazon gift card to the computer to shop for their book.
