Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our neighborhood school has a large number of special needs students, who work alongside our general education population. They are all wonderful kids, but creating an atmosphere of acceptance and tolerance of each other and our differences is always a priority in our school. We want all students to respect each other because we are all equally special in our own way! We want to promote a healthy learning atmosphere where students love school. We want students to reach out and help each other, no matter what others' external appearances may be.
Our students need a great deal of motivation, encouragement, nurturing, love, guidance, many smiles and positive praise, but they also need to learn to accept each other!
My Project
In our school we have students from many different cultures, along with students with different abilities. We always work with students to get them to understand each other and get to know them, not make hasty judgements from the way others appear.
I would like our students to research and write about other countries and cultures to gain a better understanding of others and why we all celebrate, eat and dress differently.
I would also like them to understand different disabilities and why others appear different to them. By using technology, as most students prefer, we can focus on different areas of the World. We can watch video clips, view interactive maps, research new places, learn about different educational systems and hopefully find other students at the same age level to communicate with. Our students need to understand why we are different and celebrate our differences, but first they need to understand and appreciate each others' cultures. By being able to use laptop computers to complete research based activities, they can then create projects, presentations and orally discuss the importance of acceptance and understanding others.
