Our school is in a high poverty area. Our children come to us with low academic skills and from families that are uneducated, gang affected and thus do not or cannot support the students' education.
Over the years I have noticed that when students find meaning in education they are hungry to learn. However, many of the textbooks are meaningless to them because the stories have no correlation to their lives.
The Weekly Reader subscriptions provide an interesting medium for students to practice their reading, mathematics and other state-tested skills in a way that has meaning. The articles are short yet thought provoking. Further, when we are finished with the current magazines at school the students can take them home and share them with their families enhancing their comprehension as well as their families'.
Please help these students learn to read and apply mathematics, graphs and other real life skills to their daily lives. With your generous gift you can help a student who lives with everyday challenges, poverty, gangs and lack of family support to gain a thirst for learning and become an active participant in our society.
