My students need a classroom library where the majority of books mirrors their race. If they can see themselves in the books they read they WILL read more.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"I hope my son will make it to 10th grade like me!" is a statement I heard from one of my student's dad. Under the right circumstances, his son is completely capable of becoming a successful college educated adult. The students in my classroom are faced with unimaginable challenges daily. Being a Title I School located within the inner city of Birmingham, Alabama, the majority of our students live in government housing. All students at my school receive a free breakfast and lunch. For some of them, these are the only meals they may receive the entire day. Many are given food bags to take home over the weekend.
My Project
We need more quality books in our classroom library. It is a struggle to get children to be still and read. I believe they will enjoy reading if they can see themselves in a book. Our class library needs to mirror the race of the students in my classroom.
Educators, caretakers and advocates must ensure that all children have access to diverse images and stories that affirm identity and support development.
Books that celebrate diversity teach children that it is okay to self-express, identify, and create their own definition of Blackness, in a society that often discourages black children from authoring their own narratives. Books about black girls and boys provide concrete alternatives to negative stereotypes about black women and men frequently perpetuated by popular media.
