Do you remember the last time a child chose a book to read over a computer, cell phone, or hand-held video game? I want my students to have the best of both worlds, where they can use interactive technology AND have the love for reading a good book!
My children are all from military families.
They have had many obstacles in their short lives. Many of my kids come from low income families, or are in homeless situations. Many are struggling readers, being either below or far below reading on grade level.
My Project
I am requesting a Blackberry tablet. The tablet would provide an innovative and inspirational way to promote reading in and outside of the classroom. The tablet would provide a way to have electronic books. I want to purchase Reading A-Z, which is a reading program designed to help fill in phonics, phonological, fluency, and comprehension gaps. I would have a struggling reader read on the tablet and answer comprehension questions. I would then use the data to help target more individualized reading instruction. I teach English/Language Arts/Reading, and Social Studies. My students struggle with anything that has happened in history. I would also use the tablet for research. Students will make interactive timelines, watch historical videos, and listen to stories on the tablet. This would be a great resource since I have only two classroom computers (which I am blessed with), but with 27 students in my homeroom, it's difficult to meet all of their needs in technology.
My students really deserve the best!
Many of them have had so many difficulties, hardships, and undesirable experiences, that you would think they would have already been featured in a "Lifetime" special. I want to be able to offer another outlet or escape through technology and reading. Please help me give them more opportunities!
