My students are amazing, and some of the brightest students out there. They have the unique advantage of knowing two or more languages, and carry skills that are unique to the English learner population. Their problem-solving, grit, and determination make them the hardest-working students I know. I work with students ranging from kindergarten to seniors, and love to see the growth from year to year as students grow in their use of English, and as valuable participants in their school community.
Research has shown that a solid base in literacy on a student's native language can produce stronger learning in a second language. My students have little access to quality books in their native language of Spanish. I want to expand the range of books available in Spanish so that students can enjoy reading at home with their family and feel proud of their linguistic heritage. The small selection of Spanish books that I currently have are in high demand, with students actively recommending books to each other as they excitedly exchange them each week. I want to build on this excitement as students feel appreciation for their language and culture by giving them more selection and a visually-appealing library to browse.
