This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am trying to get my repeat freshmen excited about reading. This story will hopefully make reading more fun and exciting for them.

My students are awesome.

They are repeat freshmen, meaning, they have already taken Freshman English before. This time though, they are ready to pass. They all have a different attitude this year about English and realize that they need this class to graduate. I would like the book Hunger Games for my students to read because there are no other classroom book sets in our Freshman curriculum that the students have not read. We only have about 6 novels for our students to read, and out of those it is hard to find one that most of them haven't read. I have mostly 15 and 16 year old students but some students are older. I teach in an urban high school where reading is not something that most students enjoy. I want to use this book to get the students excited about this reading.

My Project

I am requesting 30 Hunger Games books so that my whole class can have a copy to themselves. We are used to sharing resources because our district does not always provide us with enough copies for everyone. Since this is a high interest read, I want everyone to be able to take one home with them. We will do many activities with this book. We will play our own sort of Hunger Games to get students excited about reading. We will also write a persuasive paper based on this novel because that is also required this quarter. I would like my students to learn that books are fun, as well as learn some new vocabulary that comes with the book.

This project means a lot to me.

When I first read this book I was hooked on the series. I just know that my students will also be hooked. This donation will change how students see reading and hopefully find it as enjoyable as I do. Most of them have not had new books to call their own, and I would love to see the look on their faces when they each get their own copy.
